FROM THE GEN X CORNER
Why are we a part of a professional organization? I have been a part of AORN since I graduated from nursing school, but why. The board was discussing recruiting new members at the last meeting and I mentioned that maybe the president should say something about the benefits of being a part of this organization. Well that did not go far; they said that it would be a great thing for generation X to discuss. Well I then looked at them and said I was not sure that I knew the real reasons that I was a part of this organization. But after thinking about it for a bit I realized that yes it may cost a yearly fee but there are many benefits. I get the monthly journal and Austin area AORN newsletter. By attending the meeting I receive a free CEU and who doesn’t need CEUs? There is all of the online education that is at your fingertips which can be found on the AORN website. Most important to me is the networking; along with the
friendships that I have made by attending the monthly meetings. They serve as
educational and many times a year we have a socials activities which include and
August Social (Bunko parties or Martini, Manicure and Messages), Golf Tournament
along with the yearly Distinguished Surgeon and Anesthesiologist of the Year
Program. This program not only identifies who the Austin Area AORN members have
voted to be the Distinguished Physician in the area but also brings the all of
these physicians together with us for a night of fun.
With a total of over 150 members and on average about 30 that attend the meeting I can pick up the phone and call anyone in the area. It is helpful to know that you have a familiar face all around town, especially if a loved one is having surgery. The networking is also nice when it comes to questions that you may have and are looking for someone with more experience than yourself. Jennifer Fey
